SUMMARY:NANDINI DAS - Courting India
DESCRIPTION:BOOK TICKETS\n  \n‘An intelligent and gripping book with a thoughtful awareness of human relationships and frailties’ (The Critic) \nWhen Thomas Roe arrived in India in 1616 as James I’s first ambassador to the Mughal Empire\, the English barely had a toehold in the subcontinent. Their understanding of South Asian trade and India was sketchy at best\, and\, to the Mughals\, they were minor players on a very large stage. Roe was representing a kingdom that was beset by financial woes and deeply conflicted about its identity as a unified ‘Great Britain’ under the Stuart monarchy. Meanwhile\, the court he entered in India was wealthy and cultured\, its dominion widely considered to be one of the greatest and richest empires of the world. \nA Waterstones and History Today Book of the Year\, Courting India reveals how Roe’s time in the Mughal Empire was a turning point in history – offering a radical challenge to our understanding of Britain and its early empire. \n  \nConcessions are available for some individuals/groups for Festival events – please see How to Book | Lichfield Festival or ask our Box Office team for further details \nPhoto: Fran Monks \n  \nBOOK TICKETS

SUMMARY:Simon Mayo - Black Tag
DESCRIPTION:Sunday Times bestselling author and legendary broadcaster Simon Mayo brings his cutting-edge new thriller to Lichfield! \nIf everything is about to burn\, what do you rescue first? \nWhen the West End Gallery in London’s fashionable Coal Drops Yard is set alight\, the fire service must use the list of paintings lodged with it – a grab list – to snatch the key pieces of art from the flames. But something has been altered. It’s the wrong list… \nThen the ashes reveal another tragedy: an unidentified dead body. Someone who shouldn’t have been in the gallery. Crusading journalist Famie Madden wants to know who it is and why they were there. \nSoon it becomes apparent that the ashes are hiding much more than they should be – and that this is much more than a casual act of arson… \nSimon Mayo MBE is a writer and broadcaster. His previous books include the Sunday Times bestseller Knife Edge\, Mad Blood Stirring\, Blame and the Itch trilogy\, filmed for TV by the ABC (and now also an acclaimed opera). He hosts Drivetime on Greatest Hits radio and hosts the The Take film-review podcast with Mark Kermode. \nLFF Priority Booking Opens: Platinum/Founder/Millennium/Gold – 4th February | Silver/Bronze: 11th February | General Booking Opens: 18th February \nBOOK TICKETS

SUMMARY:Nathen Amin - Son of Prophecy: The Rise of Henry Tudor
DESCRIPTION:Historian Nathen Amin returns to the Festival following his successful appearance in 2021 (The House of Beaufort).  \nAs England’s most celebrated dynasty\, it’s often overlooked that the Tudors have their origins in rural Wales\, far from the centres of English power where they dared to become great.  \nWhen Henry Tudor won the crown by defeating Richard III\, he was a stranger to those he now ruled\, an ‘unknown Welshman’ in the words of his defeated foe. At home\, however\, Henry had long been championed as the Son of Prophecy\, a foretold national messiah who would free his oppressed people from their misery.   \nSon of Prophecy deftly explores how one family thrived during lean years of political chaos and inter-generational bloodshed to leave behind a complex legacy that changed the face of England and Wales forever. The Tudors\, before they became THE Tudors…  \n  \nNathen Amin is from Carmarthenshire. He focuses on the 15th Century and the reign of Henry VII\, and has written five highly acclaimed books. A trustee and founding member of the Henry Tudor Trust\, in 2022\, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. \nLFF Priority Booking Opens: Platinum/Founder/Millennium/Gold – 4th February | Silver/Bronze: 11th February | General Booking Opens: 18th February \nBOOK TICKETS

SUMMARY:Mensun Bound & Mark Frary - Wonders In The Deep: Extraordinary Shipwreck Discoveries from Spanish gold to Shackleton’s Bible
DESCRIPTION:An awe-inspiring deep-dive into the treasures found on the sea floor and what they reveal about our past. \nWonders In The Deep sees renowned archaeologist Mensun Bound left\, who headed the team that discovered Shackleton’s Endurance\, join forces with our guest today\, journalist Mark Frary below left\, to argue that human history is as much about maritime exploration as it is about what happens on land. Using the many treasures Bound has discovered on the seafloor\, they have created a maritime history of the world from 3000 BC to present\, via the Ancient Romans and Egyptians\, right through to the US Navy. The objects range from skeletons to sewing pins\, all preserved in shipwrecks hundreds of years old. Interwoven with beautiful photographs\, Wonders In The Deep is a riveting story of ambition\, defeat and ingenuity.  \nPhoto: Becky Kerr Photography \n  \n  \n  \n \nMark Frary has published 12 books and has written for The Times and Sunday Times\, on subjects including science\, technology\, travel and business. Co-author and underwater archaeologist\, Mensun Bound\, is the bestselling author of The Ship Beneath The Ice. SUMMARY:ADDITIONAL EVENT - Carl Chinn - Peaky Blinders: Historical Reality
DESCRIPTION:The Peaky Blinders as we know them\, thanks to the hit TV series\, are infused with drama and dread. Fashionably dressed\, the charismatic but deeply flawed Shelby family blind enemies by slashing them with the disposable safety razor blades stitched in to the peaks of their flat caps\, as they fight bloody gangland wars and defy the authorities.   \nBut who were the real Peaky Blinders? DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – to join our waiting list for this event\, please email boxoffice@lichfieldfestival.org \nA regular visitor to the Festival\, Tracy Borman joins the Festival as our first writer/historian in residence. Alongside her academic and writing career\, Tracy is a familiar face on radio and TV. Here\, in the first of two special 2023 events\, she talks about her new book (released this May). \nAnne Boleyn and Elizabeth I. Their stories are as familiar as they are compelling. Henry VIII’s obsessive love for Anne turning to disappointment when she failed to give him a son\, her bloody death on the scaffold barely three years after being crowned queen. Elizabeth’s turbulent path to the throne\, her glorious reign – a ‘Golden Age’ with overseas adventurers\, royal favourites\, the vanquishing of the Armada\, all presided over by the self-styled Virgin Queen.  And yet\, their stories have never been told together. \nPiecing together evidence uncovered while researching her new book\, Tracy reveals Anne Boleyn’s relationship with\, and influence over her daughter Elizabeth. In so doing\, she sheds new light on an extraordinary mother and daughter who changed the course of British history forever. \nSponsored by Barbara & David Porter \n  \n BOOK TICKETS
