MADELEINE PICKERING – Violin – Young Artist Series

Royal Academy of Music graduates Madeleine Pickering and pianist Victor Lim celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth in an all-French programme.

British violinist Madeleine Pickering loves to use her performances as a way to bless people with music. Her playing reveals her delight in the rich depth and sweetness of the violin, and her passion is to use this versatile instrument to offer audiences experiences of imagination and reflection.

In 2021, Madeleine was named a Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist for Making Music UK. She has given recitals at concert series across the UK and performed many of the major violin and viola concertos. She was recipient of the Len Lickorish Memorial Prize in the strings category of the Royal Overseas League Annual Music Competition 2022, and has been a member of the Musicians’ Company Young Artist Programme since 2019 when she received the Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Music Trust Special Award. As a student of the Royal Academy of Music in London, she won all the major internal prizes for her instruments, including the Theodore Holland Viola Prize, the Winifred Small Prize for Solo Violin, and the Martin/Hooton Violin Concerto Prize.

Madeleine is grateful to play a violin by Giovanni Pistucci of Naples, dating from c.1920, generously loaned to her by the Harrison-Frank Foundation in association with J&A Beare.

Described as a pianist with ‘with great possibilities of nuance and perfect flexibility’ (Revista Arta), South Korean-British pianist Victor Lim is establishing himself as one of the most versatile and creative musicians of his generation. Following his first public appearance in the televised BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2012, Victor has performed around the world in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Romania, China, Singapore and South Korea. Victor is a City Music Foundation Artist, Making Music UK’s Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist and the winner of the 2021 RNCM Gold Medal. As a musician with tireless curiosity for all genres of music, Victor’s interest in new music has led to recent work with Thomas Adès, Graham Fitkin and Stephen Hough. Victor’s affinity with the music of Beethoven has been recognised by two awards from the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, whilst he is known to have a great personal passion for the works of Robert Schumann.
