Young Artist Series

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF ARTISTS – our previous artists Mathilde Milwidsky and John Reid have had to cancel their appearance with us due to Covid quarantine regulations. We are very grateful to Ionel and Ayaka for stepping in a short notice.

Ionel Manciu was born in the Republic of Moldova.  Laureate of numerous national and International competitions, he made his official debut aged ten with the Moldovan National Chamber Orchestra, performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto in G-major. Recent highlights include a concert at the Carnegie Hall as part of the Guildhall Artists in New York series, a performance of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 at the Barbican Hall and a recital of all six Ysaÿe Solo Sonatas at the 1901 Arts Club, generously supported by the Hattori Foundation. As part of the Mithras Piano Trio (with whom he plays on July 18th at St Michael’s Church), he is the winner of the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, the Royal Over-Seas League Competition and the Cavatina Trust Chamber Music Competition, as well as being Kirckman Music Society Young Artists, Countess of Munster Young Artists and YCAT Finalist. Ionel is currently a junior fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the guidance of Professor David Takeno. He plays on a Gagliano violin generously loaned by the Tompkins Tate Musical Instrument Trust.

He will be accompanied at the Festival by pianist Ayaka Shigeno in a programme that includes

Debussy Sonata in G minor
Schumann Sonata No. 2 in D minor
