Outdoor Shakespeare on Lichfield Cathedral’s West Front

“If music be the food of love play on!”

Join The Lord Chamberlain’s Men as they celebrate their 21st year with Shakespeare’s greatest romantic comedy, Twelfth Night. Romantic confusion, mistaken identity, practical jokes and riotous disorder abound in this hilarious play about love, its many and glorious facets, and the mess it can make of us all.

With a history stretching back to William Shakespeare’s original company, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present this joyous play as it was first performed – in the open air, with an all-male cast and Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.

Bring a picnic to make a night of it – and, whatever the weather, please assume that the performance will be going ahead!

This is The Lord Chamberlain’s Men’s own weather advice for their outdoor performances:

Every theatre performance is unique, but this is especially the case with The Lord Chamberlain’s Men which takes place in the open air where the stage and audience are entirely uncovered.

Sunny and clear or cool and overcast, each performance and venue can be distinctly different as the weather plays its part. The point at which the sun sets and the moon and stars brighten and twinkle adds a thrilling extra dimension to the experience of witnessing one of our performances; underneath the same stars and moon as Shakespeare was when he first saw his plays performed. And, like him, even we cannot control the elements!

Some of our audience’s favourite memories have been of the sun breaking through the clouds during the show whilst some of the most electric performances happen in the wake of rainfall. It is best to come prepared for all types of weather; sun hats, sun cream, sunglasses, raincoats and rain hats should all be considered. We continue in all but the very worst weather. We may, on occasion, need to pause and re-start the production due to the weather but rain does NOT stop play with us!
