Fairytales Re-imagined: Creative Writing Workshop for Kids

We are very excited to announce our first virtual event for kids aged 7-11 with Staffordshire Poet Laureate Mel Wardle Woodend!

Join in online on Saturday 18th April to hear some fairy tales – with a twist – including ‘The Four Little Pigs’, ‘Red Riding Hood and the No Nonsense Grandma’, and ‘Snow White with her Wits about Her’ and enjoy imagining and writing your own versions. Mel’s workshop uses dyslexia friendly prompts and resources, making it accessible for all aspiring young writers.

The workshop will feature readings of Mel’s own fairy tales re-imagined, a poem about books to get children into the creative spirit, and writing activities including:

– Setting the scene
– Understanding the three-point story arc
– Ways we can paint pictures with our words
– Story Board construction
– Free write time

The workshop will end with a Sharing Words session where children can share the stories they have created so far. There will also be the opportunity for children to continue working on their stories after the workshop, email the final pieces to Mel, and she will read these out or post them onto her Facebook Author page: https://www.facebook.com/melwardlewoodend/

We’ll be running the event as a ‘Donate what you can, if you can‘ to raise funds for Lichfield Festival as we try to make it to our 40th Anniversary in 2021.

Mel is an author and poet – with several dyslexia friendly books published. She is a member of the National Association of Writers in Education and regularly facilitates dyslexia friendly creative writing and poetry workshops in schools and libraries around the West Midlands. Her poetry is inspired by her family, animals, the natural world, social, environmental and political events, and her children’s stories are inspired by nature and animals, the fantastical, and often explore themes of friendship.
