Announcing TINY STORIES

In the run-up to – and during – our online programme of events in July, we’ll be sharing a very special, miniature series designed to ignite curiosity and inspire reflection…

So, what are “Tiny Stories”?

Our fantastic artists, Kate Romano and Rob Godman, have created seven tiny stories for the online Lichfield Festival. These little collages of music-and-spoken-word are all less than 5 minutes long and form a wünderkammer of curiosities…. ghost trains, snowglobes, clocks, electricity pylons, ships in bottles, an extraordinary feminist icon …and conclude with a reflection on the strange and silent times in which we find ourselves.  All the material was created and recorded in Rob and Kate’s separate homes and Rob’s soundscapes are derived from the sound of Kate’s voice, field recordings made during the lockdown and original composition. We hope that you enjoy exploring these eclectic, dream-like miniature worlds.

We’ll be releasing the first three Tiny Stories every Sunday at 7pm in the run-up to the festival, with the remaining four stories spread throughout our fantastic, soon-to-be-released programme of events.

Tiny Stories Biographies:

Kate Romano is the Artistic Director of Lichfield Festival’s ASPIRE! Programme. She’s also a writer and regular presenter on BBC Radio 3, a clarinetist, producer and the CEO of Goldfield Productions. These seven Tiny Stories for Lichfield Festival build on the long-running Radio 3 series Time Traveller and Our Classical Century which Kate has been contributing to for 3 years, writing and narrating over 150 short stories.  Despite generally having large ambitious thoughts, Kate is curiously fascinated by the playful, strange and quirky nature of tiny things.

Rob Godman is a composer and enthusiast for all things ‘sound’. He regularly uses spoken narrative in his works, exploring different languages and dialects, examining the everyday musicality of speech. Rob has a passionate interest in how sound behaves acoustically as a means of helping us explore the space we live in. Many of the field recordings used in Tiny Stories became possible because of the lockdown, making for an uneasy relationship between the destructive pandemic and the resulting quiet that allowed the previously inaudible, to become audible.
