A masterclass in storytelling through song – Holly Carter

Young Critic Ophelia takes us along on a warm July evening to see Holly Carter, read what she has to say about forming connections with audiences. 

Calming, captivating and effortlessly charming, Holly Carter’s performance at The Hub in Lichfield was a masterclass in storytelling through song. Blending stunning vocals with thoughtful, personal lyrics, Carter created an intimate atmosphere that drew the audience into every performance.

Rather than simply moving from one song to the next, Carter took the time to share the stories behind her music. Tracks including Stella, Christine and Stetson Kennedy were introduced with stories about overlooked historical figures and personal inspirations that had shaped the songs. These introductions gave each tune an added sense of purpose, allowing the audience to connect not only with the music but also with the people and ideas that inspired it.

Her set leaned heavily into upbeat folk melodies that perfectly complemented the warmth of the summer evening. Yet Carter showed equal strength in her quieter moments, with slower, more reflective songs arriving exactly when they were needed. This thoughtful pacing kept the performance feeling fresh and emotionally engaging throughout.

Every song was performed with enthusiasm and heartfelt emotion. Whether singing an uplifting folk tune or a slower ballad, she maintained a genuine connection with her audience, making the evening feel both personal and memorable.
