‘Not the Disney version!’- Sleeping Beauty, Ballet Cymru
Young dancer and critic Evie, saw Sleeping Beauty performed by Ballet Cymru and gave us her take on this classic ballet performed in new ways.
Ballet Cymru visited Lichfield Cathedral in July to share their performance of Sleeping Beauty. The Cathedral was a great backdrop for the ballet as its character added to the effects used by the technical team. I loved how the lighting matched the scene and how the projections showed the mood and where the characters were, as it created an interesting atmosphere.
I thought that Ballet Cymru had an interesting take on the story of Sleeping Beauty. The story is the traditional tale used for the ballet – not the Disney version! I personally thought that the character of Maleficent was portrayed too darkly and unbalanced rather than a regal, almighty figure. Near the end, when the story had essentially finished, the dancers went on to perform solo ballet dances, which were stunning, but if you came to see the story of Sleeping Beauty then it’s maybe not for you. If you want to see a quality ballet performance then I would recommend this 100%!
Being a dancer myself I appreciate the hard work and effort put into the performances. They certainly put their all into this production and moved with power and elegance. I was able to speak to a former dance teacher of mine, Miss Phoebe, who was also in the audience. She said, “A stunning location for a beautifully performed contemporary take on a classic ballet” And I have to say that I agree!
