Photography Walk, Lichfield Camera Club

We learnt about composition, leading lines, and light.

During the introduction about what we were going to do, I noticed that the audience was mainly older adults. Just before the introduction, I was informed about the Lichfield Camera Club by a member who was helping me throughout the walk. The groups were based on skill level, which personally I did not like, as beginners couldn’t talk to experts as they went separate ways. However, a leaflet with some information on what we were going to do, and about the club, was given to everyone, which was quite thoughtful of them.

During the walk we learnt about composition, leading lines and light. We first walked through town towards Minster Pool. While walking through town I took some photos of various things, mainly flowers. Once we had reached Minster Pool, I learnt about leading lines and used the fence surrounding the pool as a leading line (which leads the viewer into the image). As we reached the end of Minster Pool, I experimented with taking photos of a tree trunk quite close up as I thought it would add an abstract aspect of what I did during the experience.

After that, we all went to beacon park and had a look at composition and position to create a different kind of image. The first I learned about this was when I was told to go low to the ground and point the camera upwards toward the main focus of the picture, to create a feeling that it is towering above you. This was when I realised that I enjoyed taking close-up photos of plants and wildlife – although I learnt along the way that wildlife will not always stay in the same position that you wish it to!

Once we had left beacon park we had a wander through some streets, went into a flower garden, and took some photos there. This is where my best photos shined, and where we met the other group of photographers. Once we had finished I walked down the street (without the other people, as the session had ended) and saw that the other people who were experts at photographing were still on the walk which proves that it was a little unorganised but all in all the experience was incredible.
