‘The cathedral became an extension of the music’ – Junyan Chen

Ophelia looks back on her visit with Young Critics to see concert pianist and chamber musician Junyan Chen perform at Lichfield Festival.

On 19 July, I had the pleasure of seeing Junyan Chen perform at Lichfield Cathedral. From the very first note, it was clear that this was a performance of extraordinary passion, sensitivity, and emotional depth. Chen’s love for the piano shone with each piece performed.

The cathedral itself became an extension of the music. The ghostly, ethereal melodies resonated through the stone walls, while the haunting beauty of the stained-glass windows provided a mesmerising backdrop. Together, the setting and the performance created an atmosphere that was both intimate and awe-inspiring, drawing the audience deeper into every note.

It was one of those rare performances where the venue and the music seemed inseparable. The acoustics of the Cathedral making the experience feel even more jaw dropping. It was an unforgettable evening and a testament to Junyan Chen’s artistry and ability to connect profoundly with her audience.
