Rén: The Ancient Chinese Art of Finding Peace and Fulfilment

The Chinese character for “Rén” combines the word for ‘person’ and the number ‘two’, representing human connection – and, in the teachings of Confucius, Rén is the study of our relationship with those around us.

Yen Ooi’s accessible and beautiful book explores how this philosophy applies to everything from our relationship with ourselves and those we live with, to how we relate to the wider world. Through simple changes to our lives, we can connect better with others as helpful members of society, and find fulfilment in ideas of community, morality and compassion, ultimately becoming happier human beings.

Yen Ooi is a writer-researcher exploring East & Southeast Asian culture, whose projects aim to cultivate cultural engagement in our modern, technology-driven lives. A PhD candidate at Royal Holloway, she writes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and computer games. www.yenooi.com
